Class 2 2023 - 2024

Mrs Edwards

Welcome to Class 2

This half-term our topic is 'UK countries and cities'.

This half-term, Class 2 will be learning about the UK. They will find out the names of the 4 countries in the UK and about the seas that surround our island nation. We will learn facts about the 4 capital cities: London, Cardiff, Belfast and Edinburgh and finish our topic with a focused look at Liverpool.

What can I do to support my child at home?

Talk to your child(ren) about places in the UK that you have visited. Have you ever visited London, Cardiff, Belfast or Edinburgh? Please send in photographs if you have any.

Are you able to visit Liverpool for a daytrip? We will find the Cathedrals, The Royal Liver Building, Radio City Tower, The Albert Dock and Liverpool and Everton football grounds on a map during this topic. Visiting them in person as a family would be fantastic.

English

All children are grouped for Phonics and for Guided Reading. Class 2 children have recently been assessed by myself with some children moving reading colour bands as a result of this.

Our new book to support writing this half-term is ...

somebody-swallowed-stanley-childrens-book.jpg

As we are learning more about Somebody Swallowed Stanley every day, please resist reading ahead - even if you have a copy - as it can be difficult for children to keep their extra knowledge to themselves.

What can I do to support my child at home?

Encourage your child to read to you regularly. Your child's books should be returned every Thursday so that they can be changed and ready to come home again on Friday.

Remind your child to return their signed reading record every day to get a star for reading at home.

Maths

Children in Y1 and Y2 will use their mental calculation skills during Early Morning Maths as soon as they arrive at school. Y1 will calculate answers to + and - problems. Y2 will calculate answers to +, -, x and ÷ problems.

During the daily maths lesson this half term, Y1 will be learning multiplication and division (2s, 5s, 10s) whilst Y2 will be learning about Statistics and Fractions.

What can I do to support my child at home?

Encourage your child to access Sumdog each week.

Y1 and Y2 will enjoy exploring number lines using this great free APP:

Y1 and Y2 love to explore the 100 square and to identify the missing numbers:

Science

We will be learning about 'Plants' this half-term. We will be finding out:

What is the difference between a wild plant and a weed?

What is the most common wild plant on our school field?

What are the parts of a plant called?

What can I do to support my child at home?

Discuss the above questions. Could your talk about different plants in your garden? Perhaps you could plant some seeds together and watch them grow?
